NAV-3: NAVIGATION LIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM

Properly operating navigation lights are essential for the safe operation of a vessel at night and in limited visibility. Both LED and incandescent bulbs are subject to failure and it is not always convenient to visually check whether a light is operating. Further, bulb replacement while under way can be difficult and dangerous.

The NAV-3 uses dual bulb light fixtures, such as the DHR70 Duplex lanterns, to provide a high reliability light control and monitoring system. The system continuously monitors all bulbs -- whether they are on or off – and indicates a bulb failure or shorted wiring. When a light is switched on the system will automatically switch over to the spare bulb, while indicating that the primary bulb is faulty. The automatic switch over will also occur when a light fails during operation.

The NAV-3 consists of two modules: A light control box and a switch and indicator panel. To simplify operation, the switch panel controls all lights required for the common night-time operating modes of the vessel: Under Way, At Anchor, and Towing.

The required light combinations for each mode are turned on via a single switch. The Anchor mode includes an automatic daylight sensor that can switch off the anchor-light during the day. The status of each light is indicated by corresponding indicator lights. Bulb operating and fail modes are indicated by green and red lights. Each bulb feed contains a 5 A current cut-off, which automatically resets when a short or overload is removed. Extensive RF and lighting surge protection is provided on each line. An external dimming input is available to connect to either a dimming potentiometer or a central dimming source.
